Greetings from the Lab
(aka my kitchen table)
This week I am still playing with magazine paper but I have what I think is a slightly more useful project then the woven paper hat. Of course in the end you will have to be the judge. :-)
The first step is to cut the magazine paper into uniform strips.
Then use a glue stick to paste the ends together in a long strand.
I started the "quilling" with a wooden skewer but only used it until the piece was a couple of inches in diameter, after that it just got in the way. Repeat the first three steps until the coiled disk is the desired size.
I matched the diameter of the bowl that I also used for shaping the bowl. The important thing to remember is to keep the coils tight which gets a little more difficult the bigger and more unruly the piece gets. I had the coils slip apart a couple of times and there is nothing you can do but re-wrap the piece from where ever it fell apart.
The next step is the tricky part. To shape the coiled disk over the bowl you need to support the edges while you form the disk from the middle down over the edges of the bowl.
Once the paper is shaped over the bowl it is ready to be set with some white glue or mod podge.
The final step is to remove from the bowl after the glue has dried and apply a coat to the inside of the bowl.
I am not going to lie this project did take some time even though the steps are fairly easy. But I like the mindless repetitive activities sometimes so I just went ahead and made two.
:-)
Happy Upcycling,
