Hello Friends,
I wish I had thought of this project before the Holiday's. It turned out so sparkly and shiny that it makes me think of New Years Eve. It did take some time to cut all the CD's so I have only completed one placemat so far. The good news is I have roughly ten months to make a few more, so hopefully I wont have to throw a dinner party for one. :-)
I started with one of the hubby's old work shirts. To make the base.
Then I gathered up my old CD's
I used a 1 1/4 inch square piece of cardboard as a template.
I haven't cut up a lot of CD's before this project (just a few for last weeks project CD Napkin Rings) For this project I had to do a lot more cutting.
Here are a few things I learned.
It is best to take your time. Use sharp scissors. Don't expect consistent results. There are different colors. Some CD's are more brittle and crack very easily. Some CD's loose there holographic film more easily than others. To combat the cracking and the loose holographic film I used some clear packing tape to wrap the pieces.
I started with the square shape but after playing with a few designs I decided to cut the squares into triangles.
After a lot of cutting and taping I used E6000 glue to attach the design to the shirt piece.
To finish I glued the edges to the under side of the placemat.
This project did take some time but I like the end result.
Happy Upcycling,
