I had so much fun with this project I didn't want to stop. I kept coming up with new ideas. The first two pairs of shoes started like this
and this.
And ended up as Minnie Mouse Shoes.
The process:
Step 1 - Clean shoes with rubbing alcohol
Step 2 - Paint with yellow and red paint
Step 3 - Add black marker details if desired
Step 4 - Use E6000 glue to attach bow
Step 5 - Finish with one or two coats of hi gloss polycrylic
Next up is this pair of plain sling back shoes.
That turned in to these Hello Kitty Shoes.
The process
Step 1 - Clean shoes with rubbing alcohol
Step 2 - Paint with pink paint
Step 3 - Sketch "Hello" on to shoes
Step 4 - Outline with black marker
Step 5 - Paint with black paint
Step 6 - Use E6000 glue to attach decorations
Step 7 - Finish with one or two coats of hi gloss polycrylic
For one more painting experiment I started with these shoes.
And made these candy corn painted shoes.
The process
Step 1 - Clean shoes with rubbing alcohol
Step 2 - Mark shes with painters tape
Step 3 - Paint with white, orange, yellow and black paint
Step 4 - Finish with one or two coats of hi gloss polycrylic
But that's enough with the simple painting projects. Lets start with these black peep toe shoes
and make these Ruby Slippers.
The process
Step 1 - Clean shoes with rubbing alcohol
Step 2 - Paint with coat of white paint if needed then cover with red coat of paint
Step 3 - Add red sugar coat (detailed below)
Step 4 - Paint on coat of red glitter glue
Step 5 - Finish with one or two coats of hi gloss polycrylic
Or maybe you are more interested in how I made these plain pumps
Into these Glass Slippers.
I don't know what made me decided to use sugar on my shoes but I have actually done crazier things, or at least similarly crazy things. For example I once did a shoe make over which involved using Criso, yep, the cooking oil stuff. And then of course there was the baby powder and pasta tin can project. So really sugar on a pair of shoes shouldn't be that much of a surprise. :-)
The process
Step 1 - Clean shoes with rubbing alcohol
Step 2 - Use E6000 glue to attach decorative crystals to shoes (I had this old lamp shade with lots of plastic crystals)
Step 3 - In a large container mix some sugar with a few drops of water to make the sugar a little more chunky (for ruby slippers use red food coloring instead of water.
Step 4 - Working in small sections add E6000 glue to shoe.
Step 6 - Smooth glue with a tooth pick or skewer.
Step 7 - Sprinkle sugar mixture over glue area.
Step 8 - Lightly brush on a coat of polycrylic.
Repeat steps 4 thru 8 until shoe is covered.
Step 9 - Brush on a coat of silver glitter glue.
Step 10 - Finish with a coat of polycrylic.
Happy Upcycling,
