I went back to playing with my faux ceramic paste this week. This time I decided to try more of a metallic finish. The process is pretty much the same as my first faux ceramic finish which you can find here. For these tins I applied a slightly thicker layer to the outside top and bottom of the cans and allowed them to dry for at least 24 hours before painting with a primer coat and a top coat of silver metallic paint. For the antique finish I used the same technique as I did my paper bracelet here.
The "labels" are made from salt dough. There are tons of recipes out there and the flour to salt ratio is anywhere from 4 to 1, 2 to 1 and even 1 to 1. I used 4 parts flour to 1 part salt and added water until it was the right consistency.
I cut the oval shape with the protective cap that comes on women's deodorant. :-) Dried them over the cans to shaped them after adding the design which was "carved" with a tooth pick. The labels are painted with finger nail polish and attached with E6000 glue.
The final step is a coat of polyurethane to seal and add some shine.
As projects go I think that this has potential even though I am not completely satisfied with my first results. What would you change? I think they might look better in all silver. Maybe they need a different decoration all together?
Oh well I am probably on to something completely different next week.
Happy Upcycling,
